Ray Donovan, a professional fixer, is emotionally adrift after personal tragedies. He becomes entangled with Andrew Finney, a powerful and manipulative businessman, and his ambitious daughter, Paige Finney, who aims to sell a movie studio and build an NFL stadium. Ray's initial task is to rescue Andrew's kidnapped son, which quickly draws him into the Finney family's dangerous world.

Ray commits to working for Andrew, even securing his brother Terry Donovan's (a former boxer) release from prison after a Judge's death occurs during Mickey's (Ray's criminal father) attempt to bribe him. Ray then double-crosses Andrew by aligning with Paige to secure a stake in her NFL team. This leads to escalating conflicts, including Andrew Finney murdering Varick (his associate) to cover up secrets, and Ray helping to dispose of the body. Ray ultimately exposes Andrew's affair with Varick to protect Paige's deal.

The season culminates in a violent confrontation with the Minassians, a criminal family Mickey (Ray's father) has angered. During the shootout, Terry is shot, and Michelle is killed. Ray, wounded, confesses his past sins to Father Romero before collapsing, leaving the Donovan family scattered as Bridget runs away and Mickey flees.
