Flint forms an uneasy alliance with Vane, whose ship and crew Eleanor later gives to Flint. The pursuit is fraught with internal conflict; Flint throws Billy Bones overboard, a trusted crewman, and later murders Gates, his quartermaster, to protect his secrets and maintain command.
