Short on time? Here's the essentials:
After a devastating bombing at the CIA headquarters, former Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody is framed as the mastermind and becomes a fugitive. CIA officer Carrie Mathison, who believes in Brody's innocence despite her bipolar disorder, is publicly disgraced and committed to a psychiatric hospital. Her mentor, Saul Berenson, the acting CIA Director, appears to betray her, revealing her condition and past affair with Brody to a Senate committee. However, this public breakdown is a calculated ruse: Carrie and Saul are secretly working together to draw out Iranian intelligence officer Majid Javadi.
Carrie is released and begins to work with Javadi's lawyer, seemingly against the CIA, as part of the elaborate plan. Meanwhile, Brody is found in a dire state in Caracas and is coerced by Saul into undertaking a dangerous mission in Iran. His task is to assassinate General Akbari, a high-ranking Iranian official, to facilitate Javadi's rise as a double agent for the CIA. Brody successfully carries out the assassination, bludgeoning and smothering General Akbari to death, and calls Carrie for extraction.
Despite his success, Brody's extraction is thwarted, and he is captured by Iranian forces. He is then publicly executed in Iran. Four months later, Carrie, now pregnant with Brody's child, is stationed in Istanbul and secretly adds a star for him on the CIA memorial wall.
