Short on time? Here's the essentials:
In 1950s Kansas City, an uneasy truce exists between two rival crime syndicates: the Black Cannon Limited, led by the ambitious Loy Cannon, and the Italian Fadda family, now headed by the insecure Josto Fadda. Their fragile peace is maintained by an exchange of their youngest sons, but this quickly shatters when Fadda patriarch Donatello is murdered by Nurse Oraetta Mayflower, a serial killer. Caught in the escalating conflict is Ethelrida Smutny, a bright teenager whose family is indebted to Loy.
The initial peace quickly devolves into a brutal gang war. Josto's violent brother, Gaetano, challenges his leadership, while Loy retaliates against the Faddas for perceived slights. The conflict intensifies with the assassination of Doctor Senator, Loy's trusted advisor, by Constant Calamita, a Fadda enforcer. Meanwhile, Ethelrida uncovers Oraetta's murderous secrets, and escaped convicts Zelmare and Swanee become entangled, robbing Loy and even capturing Gaetano. The violence claims many, including U.
