He is widely recognized for hosting and co-executive producing the Discovery Channel series Expedition Unknown, as well as his previous work on Destination Truth and Expedition X. Gates received an Earphones Award for his audiobook narration and Expedition Unknown won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program in 2025.
